The Coral Reefs of Eilat: A Diver's Paradise

Eilat sits at the top of the Red Sea's Gulf of Aqaba, where a fringe of coral reef grows almost at the shoreline - one of the world's northernmost reefs, and rare in that you can walk off a beach and be floating over coral in two minutes. Water temperatures stay swimmable all year (21°C even in midwinter), visibility regularly passes 20 meters, and the reef life - clownfish, moray eels, rays, clouds of anthias - starts in waist-deep water.

Where to get in

Coral Beach Nature Reserve is the protected heart of it: marked snorkel trails over the reef, with buoys, lifeguards and an entry fee that keeps the crowds managed. Just south, the Underwater Observatory lets non-swimmers see the reef from below the surface without getting wet. The Dolphin Reef offers a different encounter - a resident bottlenose pod in a natural-seawater enclosure, with guided snorkel and dive sessions.

Diving vs snorkeling

Snorkelers honestly get most of the show - the reef crest is shallow. Divers have the deeper wall at the Satil wreck (a sunken missile boat resting upright at 20-25 meters, a classic first wreck dive), the Japanese Gardens' coral slopes, and the Yatush wreck for the experienced. Eilat's dive centers line the southern beaches; a discover-scuba session runs half a day and needs no certification.

Protecting the reef

Eilat's reef is fragile and closely watched - much of the city's north shore lost its coral to development decades ago, which is exactly why the southern reserves matter. Never stand on coral, don't chase or feed fish, use reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard, and keep fins up in the shallows. The reserve rangers enforce it, and rightly.

Practical tips

The reef beaches are 5-8 km south of the hotel strip - local buses run there, or take a taxi. Mornings are calmest; the Eilat wind picks up after noon. Summer water is bath-warm but the air is brutal, so plan reef time for morning and pool time after. Winter is the sweet spot: warm water, mild air, fewer crowds.
