Makhtesh Ramon is the world's largest erosion crater - 40 km of desert canyon carved not by meteorite but by water and time, its cliffs striped in a hundred shades of sand. The small town of Mitzpe Ramon sits right on its northern rim, which means you can drink morning coffee over the edge and be hanging off that edge on a rope by ten. Rappelling down the crater wall is the signature adrenaline move of the Negev.

The rappelling itself

Local operators run guided descents off the rim - around 30-40 meters down sheer desert rock, no experience needed, all gear and instruction provided. The first step backward over the edge is the hard part; after that it's pure views. Book ahead in season, go early (the rock bakes by midday), and wear closed shoes. Most operators also run jeep tours into the crater and archery or desert-survival add-ons.

Beyond the rope

The crater floor rewards more than a rappel: the Carpentry Shop (HaMinsara), a hill of prism-shaped basalt columns; the colored sands of the small makhtesh; and hiking trails like the Mount Ardon ascent for the full panorama. Ibex wander the rim promenade in town like they pay rent. And at night, the area's certified dark skies make Mitzpe one of the best stargazing spots in the country - the Milky Way is the evening show.

Practical tips

Mitzpe Ramon is 90 minutes from Beersheba and about 2.5 from Tel Aviv or Jerusalem - you want a car. Summer days are hot but evenings cool fast at 900 meters altitude; winter nights are properly cold. Stock water and snacks in town before heading into the crater - there's nothing below. One night is enough for the highlights, two if you're hiking or stargazing seriously.

Where it fits

The crater anchors a Negev loop: pair it with Avdat's Nabatean ruins (30 minutes north) and Sde Boker (Ben-Gurion's desert home and grave), or continue south to Eilat through the Arava.
