Nazareth, the largest Arab city in Israel, is where Jesus grew up - and where pilgrims have come for two thousand years. But the city that sells itself on the Annunciation keeps its other treasures quieter: an Ottoman-era old city of mansions and markets, and a food scene that many Israelis consider the north's best. Come for the basilica, stay for lunch.
The Basilica and the holy sites
The Basilica of the Annunciation dominates the city - the largest church in the Middle East, built over the grotto where tradition holds the Annunciation took place. The modern 1960s structure houses remains of Crusader and Byzantine churches below, and a remarkable collection of Madonna mosaics donated by countries worldwide. Steps away, St. Joseph's Church marks the traditional site of Joseph's workshop, and in the market, Mary's Well anchors the Greek Orthodox tradition. Mount Precipice, on the city's edge, gives the view over the Jezreel Valley - and, per Luke's gospel, the cliff the crowd tried to throw Jesus from.
The old city and its food
Nazareth's old city lanes wind past Ottoman merchant houses being slowly restored into guesthouses and cafes. The market is a working one - spices, coffee, fresh produce - and the food is the point: wood-fired lamb, stuffed vine leaves, and knafeh that draws weekend queues of Israelis from an hour away. Several family-run restaurants around the old city serve the region's definitive Galilean Arab cooking; follow the locals at lunch.
The Jesus Trail
Walkers should know the Jesus Trail, a 65-km route from Nazareth to Capernaum via Cana and the Arbel cliffs - Nazareth is its trailhead and its best base, with day sections doable without committing to the full trek.
Practical tips
Nazareth is 30 minutes from Tiberias and 40 from Haifa; buses connect all three, though a car makes the old city far easier. Churches close midday and dress codes are enforced - shoulders and knees covered. Friday-Sunday the old city is at its liveliest; Monday many restaurants rest. Base here or make it the middle day of a Galilee loop.
