Ein Gedi is the desert's best magic trick: a canyon of springs and waterfalls dropping from the Judean Desert cliffs to the Dead Sea shore, green against bare yellow rock. David hid from King Saul in these canyons three thousand years ago; today ibex and hyrax own the trails, and hikers come for the improbable pleasure of standing under a waterfall surrounded by wilderness.
The trails
Two canyons run through the reserve. Nahal David is the famous one: an easy hour-long walk up past pools to David's Waterfall, swimmable pools under the falls included - arrive early, it's Israel's most popular short hike. Nahal Arugot, the southern canyon, is longer and wilder: the Hidden Waterfall at its end rewards a half-day walk with far fewer people. Between them, the tough climb to the Ein Gedi spring and the Chalcolithic temple rewards the fit with the canyon's best views.
Flash floods are real
The reserve closes trails - sometimes the whole park - when rain is forecast anywhere in the Judean Desert, because storms 30 km away can send walls of water down the canyons. Check the Nature and Parks Authority alert the morning of your visit, take ranger instructions seriously, and never enter the canyon under cloudy desert skies. This is the one safety rule that matters here.
The kibbutz and the sea
Kibbutz Ein Gedi, on the hill above the reserve, runs a botanical garden (free to wander) and one of Israel's oldest Dead Sea-area spas. The public beach below the reserve gives you the float-and-mud ritual without the Ein Bokek hotel crowds.
Practical tips
Ein Gedi sits between Masada (15 min south) and Qumran on the Dead Sea road - the classic day is Masada at sunrise, Ein Gedi late morning, float in the afternoon. Bring water sandals or old sneakers for the pools, at least 2 liters of water, and start before 9 AM in warm months. Entry is paid; combo tickets with other desert parks exist.
