Nineteen terraces of perfect symmetry cascade down Mount Carmel toward the sea, crowned by a golden dome: the Bahá'í Gardens in Haifa are among the most beautiful designed landscapes on earth, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. For the Bahá'í faith they are a holy place - the Shrine of the Báb at their heart holds the remains of the faith's herald. For everyone else, they are simply the most photographed view in northern Israel.

Three ways to see them

From the top: the Yefe Nof Street lookout in the Carmel gives the classic postcard panorama - gardens, bay, and on clear days the coast to Lebanon. Free, always open. On a terrace tour: free guided walks (English and Hebrew, book ahead via the Bahá'í website) take you inside the upper terraces with context on the faith and the gardens' design. From the bottom: the German Colony's Ben Gurion Boulevard lines up with the terraces for the famous night view, when the whole hillside is illuminated.

Visiting etiquette

This is an active holy site: modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is required inside the gardens and shrine, large groups need advance booking, and the inner shrine keeps pilgrim hours. The gardens close on Bahá'í holy days - check the calendar before building your day around the tour.

Bahji and the wider story

The faith's holiest site, the Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh at Bahji, sits just outside Acre, 25 minutes north - another set of serene gardens, less visited and deeply peaceful. Seeing both shrines in one day ties the whole Bahá'í story together.

Practical tips

Combine the gardens with Haifa's German Colony directly below (lunch under the terraces) and Wadi Nisnas for the city's best hummus. The Carmelit funicular's Carmel Center station drops you near the top lookout; the number 136 bus links the Carmel to the German Colony. Sunset from Yefe Nof, dinner in the Colony - that's the Haifa evening.
