Jaffa eats the way it looks: layered, ancient and unhurried. The 4,000-year-old port town that Tel Aviv grew around keeps its own rhythm - fishermen mending nets by the quay, the flea market's permanent haggle, and a street-food tradition that makes a strong claim to being Israel's hummus capital. Come hungry; this is a grazing neighborhood.
The hummus question
Jaffa's hummus institutions inspire genuine loyalty arguments. The most famous - the old Abu Hassan (Ali Karavan) on Dolphin Street - still draws the line out the door for its masabacha and triple-bean bowls, served until the pot runs out in early afternoon. Around it, a dozen family hummusiyas serve their own versions, from silky to chunky, always with raw onion, warm pita and pickles. The rules: hummus is lunch food (fresh batches end by mid-afternoon), you sit where there's space, and you don't ask for a fork.
Beyond the bowl
The flea market streets supply the rest: shakshuka at the old Libyan kitchens (Dr. Shakshuka is the famous one, a pan of eggs in tomato sauce eaten with challah), malabi and knafeh from the sweet shops, Turkish bourekas, and fresh juice on every corner. Down at the port, fish restaurants serve the day's catch facing the water; up in the old city, newer kitchens do modern Arab and Levantine food in Ottoman courtyards.
Walk it off
Jaffa is made for a food walk: start at the clock tower, graze through the flea market, climb to the old city's galleries and St. Peter's Church for the Tel Aviv skyline view, and end at the port for sunset. The promenade south leads to the beaches; north, it runs all the way to Tel Aviv's hotel strip.
Practical tips
Saturday is Jaffa's big day - the flea market and restaurants are full. Hummus spots close early; plan lunch, not dinner. Parking is miserable; take the light rail to the Red Line stops or walk the promenade. Jaffa makes an easy half-day from any Tel Aviv base.
