Masada is the desert fortress where King Herod built a palace on a mesa 400 meters above the Dead Sea, and where - according to Josephus - Jewish rebels made their last stand against Rome in 73 CE. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site, and watching sunrise from its summit is one of Israel's iconic experiences.

Getting up: snake path vs cable car

You have two options. The Snake Path climbs the eastern face - a steep 45-60 minute hike that traditionally starts before dawn so you reach the top for sunrise. The cable car runs from the eastern (Dead Sea) entrance and whisks you up in minutes; note it usually opens around 8:00, too late for sunrise. On the western side (from Arad direction), the Roman Ramp path is a shorter, gentler 15-20 minute climb. In summer, start any hike at first light - by 9 AM the heat is punishing.

What to see at the top

Allow 2-3 hours on the plateau. Highlights: the Northern Palace hanging over the cliff edge, the bathhouses with original frescoes, the huge cisterns that made desert survival possible, the synagogue (one of the oldest known), and the remains of the Roman siege camps and ramp visible below - the siege works are still clearly visible from the summit. An audio guide or the site's signage brings it to life; guided tours depart from Jerusalem and Tel Aviv if you prefer structure.

Practical tips

Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person, a hat and sunscreen - shade on the summit is minimal. There's a visitor center at the eastern base with water refills, food and the small but worthwhile museum (separate ticket). The site charges entry; the cable car is priced separately. Summer midday temperatures can exceed 40°C - in July-August, the Snake Path sometimes closes during extreme heat. Pair Masada with Ein Gedi (15 minutes north) or a Dead Sea float to make a full day.

When to visit

October to April is ideal. Sunrise visits run year-round and beat both the heat and the tour-bus crowds, which peak between 10:00 and 14:00.
