Safed sits 900 meters up in the Galilee mountains - Israel's highest city - and the altitude changes everything: pine-scented air, soft light, and a sense of remove that has drawn mystics and artists for five centuries. This is the city of Kabbalah, where Jewish mysticism flourished after the Spanish expulsion, and today its old lanes mix ancient synagogues with one of Israel's best-known artists' quarters.

The synagogues of the mystics

The old city's small synagogues carry outsized history. The Ari Ashkenazi Synagogue stands where Rabbi Isaac Luria - the Ari, father of Lurianic Kabbalah - prayed in the 16th century. The Abuhav Synagogue, with its blue-painted domes, holds a Torah scroll attributed to a medieval Spanish scholar. The Joseph Caro Synagogue honors the author of the Shulchan Aruch. Dress modestly, and note that these are active houses of worship, not museums.

The Artists' Quarter

Below the old synagogues, the Artists' Quarter fills stone houses with galleries, workshops and studios - painting, ceramics, jewelry and a famous candle shop whose wax sculptures are a Safed trademark. Weekday mornings are the time to browse and actually talk to the artists; on Shabbat everything closes and the city belongs to its religious residents. In August, the Klezmer Festival fills the lanes with music - book accommodation far ahead if that's your target.

Views and day trips

From the citadel hilltop park you can see Mount Meron, the Galilee hills and on clear days the Sea of Galilee. Safed pairs naturally with Rosh Pina (10 minutes down the hill), the Hula Valley's birdwatching, and Mount Meron's hiking trails. The city also makes a calm, cool base for the whole upper Galilee.

Practical tips

Safed is about 40 minutes from Tiberias by car or bus. The old city is steep, cobbled and stairs-heavy - wear good shoes and think twice about wheelie luggage. Winters are genuinely cold and occasionally snowy; summers are pleasant when the coast swelters. Friday afternoons shut down early for Shabbat - arrive Thursday or wait for Saturday night.
